Star Dust was a civilian version of the Lancaster bomber. It had been registered to the British South American Airways. The plane was flying from Buenos Aires to Santiago in 1947, disappeared over the Andes, few minutes before its scheduled landing. The last moment messages transmitted from the aircraft’s radio operator was something like “STENDEC.” There was no trace of stardust even after massive search carried out around the crashed site. Having knocked themselves out investigators had no choice but to give up. Fifty years later, hikers discovered the plane’s wreckage in a melting glacier. Although the speculation regarding sabotage and alien abduction was ruled out, the meaning of ‘STENDEC’ remains anybody’s guess.
