Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, a scheduled International passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur met midair disaster on July 17, 2014. The plane lost contact about 50 km (31 mi) from the Ukraine–Russia border and crashed near Torez in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, 40 km (25 mi) from the border. It is believed to have been brought down with a BUK surface-to-air missile. Evidences gather this far point finger at Russia backed separatists who are believed to have shot down the plane from the territory they controlled. The total of 298 people aboard including 15 crew members perished in the crash. Two parallel investigations were led by the Netherlands. One looked into the cause of the crash and the other a criminal inquiry. Convention on International Civil Aviation had sent its expert team to investigate about the crash. However, since the crash site is a troubled area and a hotbed of armed conflict between pro-backed Russian speaking separatists and Ukraine armed forces, a satisfactory completion and conclusion of any inquiry is an uphill task.
