In 1996 he was chosen the Wisden Cricketer of the Year. He was honored with the title the Cricketer of the Year alongside four other Indians in the year 1990. He was the man behind the victory of Sri Lanka in the 1996 World Cup. He snatched 3 wickets for 42 runs and hit 107 runs not out. He was picked out as the ‘man of the match’ in the World Cup. He is hailed as the eighth most significant batsman in the ODI tournament. Wisden top 100 bowling chart ranked him 82nd. He is one such great player who Sri Lanka remains proud of.
