The Chronograph of 354 AD contains early evidence of the celebration on December 25 of a Christian liturgical feast of the birth of Jesus. This celebration was in Rome, while in Eastern Christianity the birth of Jesus was already celebrated in connection with the Epiphany on 6 January. Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. The name ‘Christmas’ has its origin in the Mass of Christ. A Mass service (Communion or Eucharist) is held by Christians to remember Jesus, the son of God, as the savior who sacrificed himself for humanity and then resurrected. The ‘Christ-Mass’ service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people organized it at Midnight. Christmas is now celebrated around the world. It is a time when family and friends get together and make merry.
