Blink and You’ll Miss It: 10 Fastest Things on Earth
Fastest Running Insect – Australian Tiger Beetle
Top speed: 5.6 mph
Rivacindela hudsoni is a type of ground beetle. It’s a really fast insect and holds the record for being the speediest runner on Earth. It can sprint at a top speed of 5.6 miles per hour or 120 times its body length per second.
This beetle was first found in 1996 by scientists from the Netherlands. They were testing two kinds of tiger beetles in Australia: Rivancidela hudsoni and Rivancidela eburneola (though some call them Cicindela hudsoni and C.eburneola). Both types of beetles have tiny wings and can’t fly.
